Known for her development of brain-compatible teaching and learning methods, and her ability to motivate students with learning challenges to excel in their academic performance, she is a much sought-after educational consultant and speaker.

Dr. Shirani is an energetic and dedicated professional who teaches children, young adults, and professionals. Her positive attitude helps her students succeed. She loves tackling difficult problems and never gives up on any client’s challenge. One of her greatest goals in life is motivating people to see their potential and helping them prosper in academia and life.

Multiple times, Dr. Shirani worked closely with Mother Teresa in Calcutta to help the poor in the community. She spearheads many projects to assist the undeserved populations around the world. In her free time, Dr. Shirani loves to entertain, attend the theater, tend to her roses and fruit trees, travel, and read books.

Dr. Shirani de Alwis-Chand earned her doctoral degree in Educational Psychology and Counseling from Andrews University and did her post-doctoral training with Dr. Jeanne Chall at Harvard University. Her educational career has included teaching from grade school to university levels.

Dr. Shirani de Alwis-Chand has established three Teaching & Learning Centers at colleges and universities. From 1993-2003, she was the founder and director of Loma Linda University’s Teaching and Learning Center. Dr. Shirani de Alwis-Chand was chosen as one of the “Women of the Century” by Andrews University for her contributions to education. She also received the Thomas and Violet Zapara award for Excellence in Teaching in 1991. In 2016, Stanford University acknowledged Dr. Shirani for her exceptional teaching.

Dr. Shirani de Alwis-Chand likes taking care of and growing her roses in her garden. She also enjoys reading and entertaining her friends in her beautiful home.
